Games for Windows Marketplace

Microsoft was pretty busy the past two weeks with E3 and now the 2008 Gamefest event. We've already mentioned some items, free LIVE for PC and DX11, but the most interesting item has to be MS announcing they are getting into the digital distribution area by adding a Games for Windows Marketplace.

The idea is to essentially mirror what they have done with the Xbox LIVE marketplace but focus this one on just PC gaming.

Shacknews was nice enough to interview a Microsoftee and they squeezed this out of him

Well, I should be clear: Games for Windows Live is a digital distribution network. I think the only thing we are not detailing is when you will be able to purchase a full game end to end on our Live service. However, you can download trailers, you can download demos, you can buy add-on content for an existing game, and all of that is digitally distributed.

So, not exactly taking on Steam like Stardock is trying to do with its Impulse platform is it? Still, by offering DLC they are definitely dipping their toes in the water here. Of course Steam pwns this by actually allowing users to pay and download games right now, and don't forget about their ability to push patches to users (a great feature btw).

Anyway, for more information right now, head over to Shack and read it at the source.

So they are not going to let you download full game from thsi? How can that count as digitial distribution?? Steam will bury MS on this.

Ha, half-assed again. I like some microsoft products but they always do silly stuff like this instead of going full STEAM ahead. Nice pun right!
