Unfortunatly the beta only offers multiplayer online to get you into the action. There are a few problems for doing this. One is that mulitplay is so fast you barely have enough time to build and explore your units and buildings. Multiplayer in the C&C series seems to be based on one thing SPEED, the faster you build a force and attack the better your chances are you are going to win. Which copies the Korean's approach to gaming with Star Craft, which is so popular. For a new game, speed sucks, you can't enjoy the flavor country if you don't have enough time to figure out what every thing does. Second problem is "what the hell?" factor, you have no idea what your are doing at first and it takes time to explore by losing matches one after another just to figure out that your sub can turn into a tank and becomes the biggest bad ass on the field... but you are to busy tring to fend off attacks to actually enjoy the game play..
The game mechanics are still the same, build base, destroy enemy. You can build on water, big woop... just easier to get attacked and end the match faster. nothing really new in this department at all.. The graphics... well... they suck, same camera set up as all the other EA C&C's, very limited. The cartoon esk pixels are ugly in my opinoin, which kinda adds camouflage to the enemy since they blend in with the bright green or blue backgrounds of what you call grass and water. Sometimes if the mini map didn't show a different color i would have walked right by units since you can bearly see them. Played with graphics on high too, really schnittty if you ask me...
System requirements.. well if you can play any of the C&C games, then you can play this one, the requirements can't get high, since it is driven off the C&C 3 engine,
New units... yes there a bunch of new shit, but really it's the same old shit just mutated. Building on water is not impressive, and what happened to the days that infantry was important... (might be why i love World in Conflict and Company of Heros). The game is total depended on super weapons and mass armies that are easy to kill...
Fact is i am not impressed, and the only reason why i am even considering buying this game is for the story.... Now don't get me wrong the C&C series of games are the greatest RTS games of all time in my opinion. I loved the first 3 installments that carried the C&C name (Tiberuim Dawn, Tiberuim Sun, Red Alert), then came the EA buy out which brought us Renegade and Red Alert 2 which were actually made by Westwood and carried the EA logo. Then we were introduced to Generals, which frankly was a good game. But then C&C 3 and now Red Alert 3 have hit us, not a fan, they are ok games to me, and lack that Westwood development touch. I am really liking RTS presented by THQ lately, they seem to have a good grasp on what makes a great RTS instead of a cheesy campy game like EA has done. Not that i hate EA, bigger companies have more money to do things right, but EA pushes to hard to get it's games out, creating havoc on newly released games causing patches and updated to become the norm. Even the consoles have been infected with this issue. In general it would have been nice to been provided with an actually level to get to know the units a bit before jumping into multiplayer action here. Thus i disagree with the beta just being a multiplayer game and needs something extra to grab my attention a bit more..
Luckily they have..
Gemma Atkinson is officially in the cast of story for the game, which is a nice touch. :) I am interested in the story how ever, being to me the most important part of any game, all games in general are the same, but the story can put them over the top, and rather like the live action cut scenes.
And now...
"The most important casting of all is obviously Tanya, the ubiquitously sexy special-ops commando for the Allies who'll be played by none other than Jenny McCarthy. Joining Jenny on the Allies side will be Gemma Atkinson and JK Simmons."
Oh yeah!
