Reviews Mixed on Metal Gear Solid Touch but Mostly Positive

MGS Touch Metal Gear Solid Touch hit the iTunes App Store this week and everyone seemed tickled to have it early and have such a "great" game come out for the platform. Turns out there is a little buyers' remorse going on. Rather than looking at this as bad news, we take this as a good sign - mobile gamers are becoming more critical and are expecting good games, not just ANY games.

We captured some opinions and added our impressions below.

Here is a sample of the iTunes review comments:
  • If you are looking for a true open world FPS, do not expect to find it here
  • ...the game is short in 15min I played half of this first release
  • The controls are perfect
  • What a craptastic game...
  • The sniping mechanic makes the game way too fun to put down!

In the most balanced review we read (TouchArcade.com), there were some good things said about the game but the reviewer wisely points out a rather glaring problem with the game that's set in the MGS universe.

Metal Gear Solid Touch is also unfaithful to the series in another blatant way. I’ve never played a Metal Gear game where Snake shoots so much. Firefight after firefight has never been what Metal Gear games are about, and what’s more, Kojima’s first foray into iPhone development lacks stealth portions, as well. What you see in the screenshots is what you get. While I appreciate the action packed into this game and had a good time playing it, I’m left scratching my head as to why such a pivotal part of series is completely disregarded.

Our experience was mixed but we're not fans of skulking around and actually prefer the shoot-em up aspects of the game. While some bitch about the price, they'll do that over any amount that's not free. The graphics are good as well as the sounds in the game. The controls do feel pretty good especially the auto-duck to cover when you take your fingers off of the screen. We wish they released the whole game instead of just the first half so hopefully the second "half" is actually much longer and larger.

It's a great first entry for Konami in the Apple MGS space and as Apple improves the devices capabilities it will only get better. Don't get us wrong, it could be better but we were surprised that it was this good to begin with.

Here's a little YouTube for you (nice thumbs...)
