The Wii Has Terrible Stickiness Once It Gets Into Homes (Updated)

Wii(The Nielsen data used for this story was retracted and reposted. See the new data here that refutes the findings below)

According to Nielsen Media, Nintendo's Wii has the lowest user activity out of any console system. This reminds me of the famous Yogi Berra line, "Nobody goes there no more; it's too crowded!" The Wii is so pervasive and omnipresent one might think that it has massive stickiness in homes. As most of you that own a Wii (me included) know, this isn't true at all. Chances are you're like me and it's just sitting there blinking blue because there's an update or three waiting for you since it was last turned on 4 months ago.

According to the numbers posted on Edge, poeple used their Wii a scant 6.8 percent of the total amount of time that they could have used the system (for the month of December 2008).

By contrast, the PS3 came in at 10.6% followed closely by the Xbox 360 at 10.2%.

The Wii can be fun when you're bowling and a few other very focused games that use the Wiimote as a natural extension. As a regular gaming platform with standard controls the Wii just isn't that good.
