Fallout 3 Mothership Zeta

A strange Alien signal is being broadcast throughout the Capital Wasteland, originating from a crashed UFO. Is it a distress call, or something far more sinister? That question is answered when you find yourself beamed aboard an enormous Alien spacecraft, with only one alternative – to fight your way to the bridge of the ship and secure your escape.

Defy hostile alien abductors and fight your way off of the massive Mothership Zeta, orbiting Earth miles above the Capital Wasteland. Mothership Zeta takes Fallout 3 in an entirely new direction – outer space. Meet new characters and join with them in a desperate bid to escape the Aliens’ clutches. To do so, you’ll wield powerful new weapons, like the Alien Atomizer, Alien Disintegrator, and Drone Cannon, and deck yourself out in brand new outfits, like the Gemini-Era Spacesuit and even Samurai Armor.

  • Find and exploit new and destructive alien technology, like the Alien Atomizer and Drone Cannon.

  • Explore the vast Mothership and learn the secrets of the Aliens' master plan.

  • Thwart the Aliens' attempt to stop your escape, and take over the Alien ship before it wreaks havoc on the unsuspecting Earth below.

  • Fight against the Alien Invaders, their robot drones, and turn their own horrible experiments against them.

  • Ally yourself with an unexpected array of characters, both from the Capital Wasteland and from Earth's past.

Leet-sauce Open world spaceship exploring, new weapons, new healing aids, new characters from Earth's past, good gameplay pacing.

4-noobs Open world closes when you're done with DLC, limited interaction with alien goodies lying around, can't make new weapons with alien parts, new characters largely cardboard with little personality or history, not enough quests.

Review What I liked:

Still open world where you can move about as you see fit. You'll be able to move from compartment to compartment and back again. Chances are if there is a door, you can get into it. This is one of the big deals of Fallout 3 and where it smacks other "open world" games like GTA IV in the ass. The sheer amount of places you can go is just amazing. Good thing they kept that for this DLC even though you're in a space ship - a big ship though.

While you're on board Zeta, you'll come across some unique characters drawn from different times in Earth's past. While none are famous (why not add Abe Lincoln or Einstein?) they add a little bit of texture and prove that the aliens have been watching us for some time. Not only that, they have been experimenting with not only humans but also brahmins.

I also liked the assortment of new alien weapons; they are extremely powerful and plentiful. Of course none are as powerful as the original alien gun you find at the crash site, you can grab some blasters that do serious damage and collect enough of them that you can always have a spare ready for fixes. There are new rifles, pistols and a new alien grenade launcher (type) guns all over the place.

In addition to the guns, you'll get new ways to heal yourself. There's some alien food lying around that does some good but the real showstopper is the biogel that once adapted to humans has a huge regen factor. At the end of the DLC I had managed to leave with 35 units of the biogel and feel pretty confident I can go anywhere now and not have to worry. I can't forget to mention the regen equipment found on the ship too. Turn it on, it heals you by walking through a field. Sweet.

Finally, the gameplay is brisk but with purpose. I never felt lost or that I was running around on a wild goose chase. It could have been a bit longer but what there was of it was paced well.

What I didn't like:

It only stays open world until you finish the last quest, then it's locked down hard. Once you complete Zeta, you'll be allowed back on board by using the beacon left at the original crash site but you'll be limited to the bridge and a couple of rooms in engineering. This is pretty lame if you ask me. The environment is created and disk space allotted so cutting off access to those that maybe just want to run around the ship is nonsensical. Bad decision.

In addition to the open world lockdown, you'll also be limited in the items you'll be able to interact with. What I mean is there will be a lot of alien artifacts lying around and on benches that are just props that you can't pick up, store or use in any way. You also can't make weapons with them - or any new alien-based home-grown weapons at all for that matter. The dart gun and the other funky weapons can be fun so the chance to make some with alien bits seems like a natural fit to me.

While some of the characters you'll meet on the ship come from different times, which is cool, they don't really get fleshed out in any real meaningful way through interaction. Yes you can listen to all of the recordings and get a sense of some of what has happened to them but it's not very engaging. It's a pity they didn't put more time into this because it would have been interesting even just for the geeks out there that want to immerse themselves a bit more into the world instead of just shooting aliens in the head.

2 hours. That's about how long it took me to wrap this one up. I'm a little disappointed that it didn't take longer. There could have been more quests, particularly outside. I've got on the space suit, why is that part so short? The space shots look fantastic and that was worth doing to see it but their could have been more action outside the ship if we had to be there anyway. How about shooting out the glass to depressurize sections and kill the little green meanies?

I was hoping this would be a little longer. I may need to wait until this goes on sale.

This looks to be a great addition to the fallout 3 add on's.
