Sony Confirms Motion Controller for Spring 2010 and Lists Supporting Games

Sony PS3 motion controller system Well its official now after having been leaked earlier in the week; Sony's Motion Controller is going to hit this spring. In addition to confirming the release, Sony even provided a list of upcoming games that will be Motion Controller-enabled.

Sony is truly terrible at keeping things secret and while they joke about (like at this year's E3) you have to think that this really pisses them off. It must be hard to try and plan a marketing initiative around a time-table that will surely be screwed by leaks.

Anyway, I'm not sure about this whole motion control craze going on with Microsoft and Sony beyond the fact that this one-ups Nintendo's Wii. Aside from that, how does this make the platform or games any better?

If you don't already know this, the Motion Controller is equipped with two motion sensors, three axes gyroscope and three axes accelerometer that can detect the controller’s angle and movement held in the user’s hand. You have to use the PlayStation Eye camera for PS3 which can accurately track the absolute position of the controller, and between this and the controller, the PS3 can detect the movement of the hand and reflect the precise movement on to the game. The sphere (like used in motion capture for games and movies) placed on the top of the controller is not only used to track the absolute position but can also give visual feedback to users by changing the colors or the illuminating patterns of the sphere. The new controller (yes, you can't use your current one) is also equipped with a rumble feature.

List of Motion Controller games:

  • Ape Escape (Working Title)
  • Echochrome 2 (Working Title)
  • Eccentric Slider (Working Title)
  • Sing and Draw (Working Title)
  • Champions of Time (Working Title)
  • Motion Party (Working Title)
  • The Shoot (Working Title)
  • Tower (Working Title)
  • PAIN*2
  • Flower*2
  • Hustle Kings*2
  • High Velocity Bowling*2
  • EyePet*2
