Mass Effect 2 hits the streets on January 26th and EA has been releasing images and videos regularly for several weeks now. What they haven't done is talk about how your ME1 saves are going to be used in Mass Effect 2 as they've teased in the past. Fortunately, the Bioware community director revealed a bit about what you can expect via the game's official forums.Chris Priestly teases it out a bit more before finally getting to the point:
At this point we have revealed that the save game import system will carryover all your decisions and plot decisions from ME1 into ME2. Did you save the Council? Who survived Virmire? And how did you handle your most ardent fan? We don’t want to list everything out and spoil the surprises we have in store for you, but rest assured you will be pleased when you see just how much carries over into Mass Effect 2.
Hmm, OK I'm just playing Mass Effect 1 right now so I guess I should be careful to choose wisely. Of course I haven't seen any noticeable differences in what I pick either way but I did just let Ashley die with the nuke on Virmire. Kind of wishing I'd let Kaiden die instead. Dumb move. Anyway, Mass Effect 2 will use your previous game decisions to... provide bonuses. Hmm, not exactly earth shattering is it? So, instead of affecting the plot, you'll get bonuses based on your saved character levels. You'll be able to import up to 11 characters from ME1 to ME2. Now before you cry NERF! - Chris is careful to point out that the bonuses aren't all that special:
...That being said these bonuses will not put new playthrough characters at a severe disadvantage. For example, some of these bonuses include a monetary boost at the start of the game, or additional research resources for use at the Normandy’s Tech Lab. Another perk is if you finished the game as a Paragon or Renegade, part of your alignment will carry over making it easier to access certain dialogue options.
I'm a bit dissapointed in this because they should be able to weave the plot decisions from the original game into ME2 a lot better than this. It's almost an after-thought at this point but I guess it's better than nothing.
