Mass Effect 2 has no feeling

Mass Effect 2

Mass Effect 2 is a hell of a game that I'm having a really good time playing. Bioware have really nailed the combat with this one, much more so than the first ME. Of course even with a game as polished as this one there will be problems and it's not with the gameplay.

While ME2 has a pretty well developed plot with a large amount of characters you can get involved with there is always a disconnect between how they perceive Shepard and what actually is happening in the game. In particular, Shepard invokes a great deal of loyalty but you do not get the feeling that this was earned. Sure you did whatever mission that solved their problem but the interaction between the characters with the clunky dialog choices just doesn't add up to someone willing to die for you.

This could have easily been improved with some smart scripting during battles and more cut scenes. The model I'm thinking of is Uncharted 2 where you really felt connected to the characters on a deeper level. While fighting there was dialog between the characters that helped move the narrative along and cut scenes that cemented the relationships that weren't Metal Gear Solid 4 long. You could see and feel why people stuck by your character and also why you felt fondness and a bond with the other characters. This feeling really is missing in Mass Effect 2.

If we look at Mass Effect 2 again there are parts of the game that are very personal, say when you're looking to score some sex. After the encounter there is no dialog in the missions that cements this relationship or lack of, no little comments about how Shepard was a stud of couldn't get it up. Just no consideration of furthering the relationship at all.

Don't get me wrong, as I stated above it's a good game - I just can't help thinking that it could have been so much better.
